Recycle Mania

Competition. There’s a certain magic to it. The thrill of the hunt. The desire to win. The inability to look away and not get caught up in it. It happens all the time in sports, in business, at the work place…even in the world of recycling.

Coming soon to a college or university near you…Recycle Mania! Starting February 7, 2016 and lasting through April 2, 2016, colleges and universities all over the U.S. will be competing to see which campus recycles the most. Keep America Beautiful partners with RecycleMania, Inc. to manage this exciting program which started over 15 years ago and is still going strong. What a great way to engage students and faculty in recycling and waste reduction.

In Florida, we have the following schools signed up to participate this year and the search is still on to add to this list. You may notice a few prominent names missing that, no doubt, will be contacted. The more, the merrier!

  • Florida State University
  • Eckerd College
  • Florida Gulf Coast University
  • Florida International University
  • Nova Southeastern University
  • University of Miami
  • University of South Florida
  • University of West Florida

Among the targeted items for recycling are paper, cardboard, bottles, cans and food service organics. But the action doesn’t stop there. Competition categories also exist for electronics recycling, film plastics and even a category for Game Day recycling at a basketball game. More details can be found at: www.recyclemania.org

Last year, the program had 394 universities participating that recycled (and composted) a total of 80.1 million pounds of waste nationwide. Very impressive! Only thing missing from those results is a Florida school in the winner’s column. We can do this, folks! If you are fortunate to live near a college or university that is listed here, please support their efforts. And even more important, if your favorite college or university is not listed here, reach out and encourage them to sign up. Your Keep Florida Beautiful team will post periodic updates during the 8-week competition to let you know who is winning the intra-state competition as well!
